Lovat Mill: The Home of Tweed
Nestled on the banks of the River Teviot in the historic Scottish Borders town of Hawick, Lovat Mill stands at the heart of tweed’s birthplace and legacy. The very name tweed itself emerged here in the early 19th century, when a London merchant misread the Scots word tweel (meaning twill) on a shipment of woven wool and forever christened the fabric tweed - a name that would come to define Scotland’s most iconic cloth.
Over generations, weaving in Hawick evolved from a cottage industry into a thriving centre of textile excellence, drawing on the region’s rich natural resources and artisanal skill. Today, Lovat Mill proudly carries this tradition forward as ‘The Home of Tweed’, producing one of Scotland’s largest stocked selections of estate and sporting tweeds, woven in Hawick and respected all over the world for their quality, colour depth, and connection to the landscape that inspired them.
Every tweed begins with carefully prepared yarns, twisted and wound in-house to define character. These are then warped and woven on advanced Dornier looms, before each cloth is meticulously inspected, hand-finished, and quality-checked.

Our Tweeds
Lovat Mill weaves many of our signature tweeds - from our new-season Ambermoore Plaid tweed, to our iconic best-selling Ayr tweed. Inspired by the shifting tones of the Scottish countryside, our tweeds take their name from the surrounding landscapes and natural elements that shape the land. Woven from 100% wool, each cloth balances character with durability, equally at home in the field or in town.
Named after the River Ayr, our iconic ‘Ayr Tweed’ takes inspiration from Scotland’s natural landscapes. Each shade and texture mirrors the river itself; blues echo the flow of water, while the earthy tones of green and brown reflect the surrounding land, woven into a cloth that speaks of Scotland’s natural beauty. The collection spans a jacket, pair of trousers, breeks and a gilet - all versatile pieces designed for life outdoors, yet understated and refined enough to be worn in town.

For those seeking something truly individual, we also offer the opportunity to create bespoke tweeds in collaboration with Lovat Mill. One such example is our exclusive Highland Club Check Tweed, developed in partnership with esteemed gunmakers F. Beesley for the Glorious Twelfth. The commission called for pieces that reflected tradition, held up in the field, but also maintained elegance. With this in mind, our Bespoke team developed the Highland Club Check with Lovat Mill, which carefully incorporated notes of purple, designed to blend in with heather on the grouse moors for function in the field.
As it was so well received, the Highland Club Check was introduced into our ready-to-wear collection, now available across a jacket, gilet, pair of trousers, breeks and a flat cap. A modern expression of tweed’s enduring relevance, woven with purpose and worn with confidence. Get in touch with our expert team here and start designing your unique tweed.
