Chester Races Style Guide

Chester Races Style Guide

Founded in 1539, Chester is officially recognised as the world’s oldest racecourse still in operation. With races taking place from May through September, the racecourse has an exciting line up of 15 race days this year, offering something for everyone. Whether you’re a dedicated racegoer, or just looking for a fun family day out, Chester has it all.

The season kicks off with the prestigious Boodles May Festival, running from the 7th until the 9th of May. For racing aficionados, these three days serve as the highlight of the season, showcasing some of the country’s top jockeys and renowned horses in competition to win the Chester cup. Throughout summer, the racecourse also hosts a series of more fun-focused events, with exciting music performances, food and drink festivals, finishing on the 20th of September with the Oktoberfest Season Finale.

The Different Enclosures

The Chester Races have a series of different enclosures; The Roodee, Tattersalls, County Concourse, County Long Room, The Winning Post and The Garden. If you’re looking for something more exclusive, where you can enjoy the finest views of racing action, we highly recommend booking a spot in the Parade area, situated right by the winning line. Accommodating just 70 guests, its summer roof garden bar and viewing terrace is the elite spot on the course to enjoy an afternoon’s racing. Similarly, the 1539 Restaurant & Bar, Chester’s on-course eatery offers panoramic race day views and a premium atmosphere, featuring an extensive wine list, premium dining and private betting facilities. Access to this area is available exclusively for members. Learn more about how to apply here.

The Roodee

Each enclosure at Chester Racecourse offers its own distinct atmosphere and dress code. If you’re in The Roodee, while there is no official dress code, it is important to note that offensive clothing and fancy dress are not permitted anywhere. We strongly recommend considering the unpredictable weather, as races run through from May until September and conditions can vary. Known for its lively atmosphere, The Roodee offers a more relaxed environment, however that shouldn’t discourage you from dressing up for the occasion. Our Moleskin Jeans would be a great fit, offering both comfort and style.

County Concourse & Tattersalls Enclosure

For racegoers in the County Concourse or Tattersalls Enclosure, a smart-casual approach is encouraged. A collared or polo shirt is required, which must be paired with either smart jeans, trousers or chinos. Trainers, shorts, tracksuits, t-shirts, sportswear and fancy dress are not permitted in this enclosure. Our Flat Front Linen Trousers would be an ideal option for this setting, which come in an array of colours to suit every preference. These could be paired with our Tattersall Check Shirt - a fitting choice for the Tattersalls enclosure of course. For that extra layer of warmth, consider one of our stylish gilets.

The County Long Room, Edinburgh Gin Garden & The Winning Post

Should you find yourself in The County Long Room, Edinburgh Gin Garden or The Winning Post, formal attire is expected to maintain the more sophisticated atmosphere of these areas. A well-tailored suit or blazer is advised, alongside smart trousers, a collared shirt and tie. At Oliver Brown, we are experts in true British tailoring, and have a plethora of formalwear options for you to explore. For a timeless, single-breasted ensemble, choose from one of our Eaton Suits. Its classic cut promises a sophisticated silhouette, perfectly suited for the occasion. Available in a range of colours and fabrics, from wool blends to linen, The Eaton Suit is ideal for both cooler and warmer weather.

Parade & 1539

When it comes to The Parade and 1539 areas, this is where you must be looking your finest. These sections are known for their exclusive, elegant ambience, which is reflected in its dress code. The official website advises these racegoers to ‘dress for a smart occasion’, where a well-tailored suit or blazer is required, with a collared shirt, tie, and smart trousers. To truly stand out, impeccable tailoring is key. If you’re after the perfect fit, we suggest that you explore our made-to-measure services. Our experts can help create the perfect suit that fits to your exact measurements, and nothing beats the confidence that comes from a good fitting suit. Book a consultation here

For these prestigious areas, we highly recommend a three piece suit. This year, we have launched a three piece lounge suit, available in three colours - Mid Grey, Royal Blue and Navy, each tailored in a classic three piece style in our Mayfair block. Featuring smoked mother-of-pearl buttons and a five-button waistcoat, these suits are crafted from Loro Piana Super 150’s finest fabric ensuring a luxurious feel. This collection promises elegance and style on race day, and will ensure that you’re looking sharp. Shop the suit here

Our collection is available for both hire and purchase, with options to shop online or in-store. We invite you to visit us for a personal fitting, where our expert team will ensure you find the perfect fit for the races. Our Chester store is conveniently located in the heart of the city, making it particularly accessible for the races. For those travelling from further afield, we also have stores located in Chelsea, St James’s and the City of London.
